The species of the genus Corbicula known from Indonesia are alphabetically listed and noted. Sixteen out of the 35 described species are considered valid, i.e. C. gustaviana, C. moltkiana, C. sumatrana, C. tobae and C. tumida from Sumatra; C. javanica, C. pulchella and C. rivalis from Java; C. bitruncata and C. pullata from Borneo; C. lindoensis, C. loehensis, C. matannensis and C. subplanata from Celebes; C. australis from Timor and C. debilis from New Guinea. A Philippine species, C. squalida, is added as a new record. |

Morphometric analysis was carried out on wing muscles of the House Fly (Musca domestica), ranging from the pupation period to death. In the first week a clear increase was found in the percentage of food reserve consumed by the cell components. Both fibrils and sarcosomes increase in circumference during the first week. The sarcosomes then fuse. After the first week few changes occur. The sarcosomal volume increases in male flies. No disintegration or degeneration of the muscle cells appears with old age. Even the fact that the wing of the male flies exhibits abrasion earlier than that of females cannot be correlated with changes in the wing muscles. The ratio of fibrils to sarcosomes is greater than two to one. This ratio differs in males and females. A... |

When Dr. R.E. Holttum kindly submitted the following essay review of two papers on Cyatheaceae, a suggestion that Dr. R.M. Tryon be enabled to reply was welcomed by both pteridologists. The editor feels grateful to them for their contribution. First Dr. R.E. Holttum: GASTONY, G.J. Spore morphology in the Cyatheaceae. I. The perine and sporangial capacity: General considerations. Amer. J. Bot. 61 (1974) 672-680. GASTONY, G.J. & R.M. TRYON. Ibid. II. The genera Lophosoria, Metaxyas Sphaeropteris, Alsophila and Nephelea. Amer. J. Bot. 63 (1976) 735-758. |

An analysis of the fishing power concepts leads to a distinction between local fishing power (at a given location). and overall fishing power. Overall fishing power takes into account the ability to detect and quickly exploit rich areas. In order to estimate local fishing power it is necessary to compare the catches of different ships operating in neighbouring areas. Such a comparison performed on two ships will give an estimate of their relative fishing powers. The closer the two ships are, the more reliable will be the estimate. A weighting function must be used, and this function is related to the spatial heterogeneity of the fish density. Such a function is provided by the variogram as defined by Matheron (1965).
